In the sub-sections that follow, you'll learn how to start vi, enter text in a file, save (write) the file, and quit vi. This allows you or others to read a vi file without accidentally changing it. When you open a file with view, you can use vi commands, but you cannot write (or save) your changes. Note that there is a read-only version of vi called view. Since vi is not window-based, this multipurpose editor can be used on any kind of terminal to edit a wide range of file types.
